hydrological cycle vocabulary Flashcards
what does the hydrological cycle show?
the movement of water
Describe 3 flows in the hydrological cycle:
- infiltration
- through flow
- channel flow
- surface run off
- groundwater flow
- percolation
what is the boundary called that separates drainage basins?
watershed
what type of system is the hydrological cycle?
a closed system
What is a closed system?
a system that has no inputs or outputs ( the water just flows round and round in a continuous cycle )
what is an input?
water going in
what is an output?
water going out
In the hydrological cycle where does the water evaporate from?
The sea and the land
what is evaporation?
evaporation is when water is heated by the sun; this causes the water to turn into gas (or water vapour), which rises into the air
what is transpiration?
transpiration is when the water is evaporating from the plant
what is precipitation?
water in all form of weather, for example rain, snow and ice
what is surface storage?
surface storage is where water is held, for example lakes, reservoirs, puddles and ponds
what is channel storage?
channel storage is when water is stored/held in the rivers
what is channel flow?
channel flow is when water in the river is flowing
what is interception storage?
interception storage is when water doesn’t hit the ground, instead it is stored in things like buildings and plants
