Hydrogen Cycle Flashcards
Hydrologic cycle
powered by the sun, movement of water in its various solid, liquid & gaseous phases between sources & sinks
Primary reservoir of water
Oceans, ice caps & groundwater acting as much smaller reservoirs.
Main reservoirs of freshwater
snow & ice, groundwater, lakes, soil, atmosphere & rivers
Transpiration
Release of water from leaves (plant surface) during photosynthesis
Evaporation
liquid water to water vapor
Evapotranspiration
sum of water evaporation & transpiration from a surface area to atmosphere
Condensation
gaseous water vapor to liquid
Precipitation
water released from clouds
Percolation
downward flow of water
Infiltration
movement of water into soil
Groundwater recharge & flow
returns water from land to oceans
Runoffs
Water moves across land surface & into streams & rivers eventually reaching oceans
Human Effects - Trees
Harvesting trees from forest can reduce evapotranspiration by reducing plant biomass
As evapotranspiration decreases, then runoff or percolation will increase
Human Effects - Mountain Slope
Clear cutting a mountain slope can lead to erosion & flooding
Human Effects - Paving Over
Paving over land to provide services (building roads, businesses & homes) reduces amount of percolation that can take place in given area
increases in runoff & evaporation will occur
