Hydrogen Bonding Flashcards
What is a polar molecule
When a molecule has an unequal distribution of charge across the molecule
When does hydrogen bonding occur?
It occurs in only polar molecules.
(Any hydrogen that bonds with either N, O, F)
Why is a hydrogen bond weaker than a covalent bond?
A covalent bond involves the sharing of electrons between two atoms
- A hydrogen bond is just an electrostatic attraction between a slightly negative charged hydrogen atom and another atom with a slightly positive charge
What are intermolecular forces?
They’re forces between molecules rather than inside molecules
What is a hydrogen bond?
It is the weak interaction between a slightly positive charged atom and a slightly negatively charged atom
