Carbohydrates Flashcards
What is a polymer?
A large molecule built up from many similar monomers joined together by covalent bonds to form a chain or a branched chain
Each bond forms as a result of condensation reacion
What is a monomer?
Its a single smaller molecule that may form covalent bonds with other similar smaller molecules to built a larger molecule
The bonds form as a result of a condensation reaction
A dimer i a molecule formed of two monomers joined together by a condensation reaction
What are the different ways carbon atoms may bond together?
They may form chains, branched chains or ring shapes
What type of molecule is a monosachharide?
and is it soluable in water?
a single molecule so does not have any bonding
It is soluable
Hva jeg skal gjore nor jeg kommer hjem
gjore exam style questions ogso skrive de sporsmolene jeg ikke greide oppi mine flashcards, skrive notes po boode anki og her
How many molecules does a disaccharide have and whats its boding?
Is it soluable?
It has two molecules covalently joined
It is soluable
How many molecules do polysaccharides have and whats their bonding?
Is it soluable?
Polysaccharides have many molecules covalently joined to each other
It is insoluable
What is the role of monosaccharides(simple sugars)?
- energy release
- transported in blood
- monomers for other carbohydrates
What are the roles of disaccharides(complex sugars)?
Energy release
Storage
Transport within plants
What are the roles of polysaccharides(Comples carbohydrates)?
- Energy storage
- Structural component of walls
