Hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
Why is carbon such a useful atom?
A
- Each carbon atom can form 4 very strong covalant bongs (usually with other carbons or hydrocarbons)
2
Q
What is a hydrocarbon?
A
- A comound made out of only hydrogen and carbon atoms
3
Q
What is an alkane?
A
- The simplest hysdrocarbon
- Each carbon atom makes 4 single covalant bonds
- Homologous series compounds
- Are saturated. This means that all carbons make 4 SINGLE covalant bonds
4
Q
What is the general forumla of an alkane?
A
- CnH2n+2
5
Q
What are the firs 4 hydrocarbons?
A
- Methane (CH4)
- Ethane (C2H6)
- Propane (C3H8)
- Butane (C4H10)
6
Q
What is are isomers?
A
- Two molecules made of the same atoms but the atoms are arranged differently
- Same molecular formula but different structural formula
7
Q
What does homologous series mean?
A
- All compounds in the group have similair properties so react in a similair way
- Compounds have the same functional group / same general formula
