Hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
What are hydrocarbons
A
Hydrocarbons are organic compounds composed of Carbon and hydrogen only.
2
Q
Properties of carbon
A
- The exceptional ability of carbon atoms to Catenate
- The ability of carbon to form single, double or triple covalent bonds.
- Different arrangement of the atoms within a molecule produces a variety of compounds
- The ease with which carbon combines with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and the halogens
3
Q
The two main classes of Hydrocarbons are:
A
- Aliphatic Hydrocarbon: Aliphatic Hydrocarbon is a hydrocarbon compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains either acyclic or cyclic. They may be saturated or unsaturated.
- Aromatic Hydrocarbon: It combines single and double bonds in one. It is a derivative of benzene.
4
Q
What is homologous series
A
This is a family of Organic compounds which follow a regular
structural pattern in which each successive member differs in its molecular formula by a –CH2- group .
5
Q
Alkyl
A
This includes all univalent groups derived from the ALKANE by the loss of
a Hydrogen atom. It determines the physical properties
6
Q
Functional group
A
This is an Atom, a radical or bond common to a homologous series
and determines the main chemical properties of the series.
