Hydrates Flashcards
What are salts?
○ an ionic compound
○ 2 or more metals and non-metals bonded together
What is an Anhydrate?
○ A salt molecule that is not bound to any water molecules
What are hydrates? (2 definitions name both)
○ a substance associated with a fixed number of intact water molecules
○ Alternative definition: an ionic compound bonded to water molecules in a definite proportion
How are salts hydrated ?
○ Salts spontaneously incorporate
water molecules into their solid form
(spontaneously meaning this happens without any external input of energy)
Adding more and more solute to a solvent…
○ Makes a solution more and more concentrated
○ Eventually, the solution will become more saturated
- A sample of hydrated magnesium sulfate has a mass
of 5.742g. when heated, steam is visibly produced.
Once steam no longer appeared, the sample of
magnesium sulfate was weighed again, with a mass of
2.801g. Determine the chemical formula of the
hydrate (5mark).
MgSO4 . 7H2O
Determine a formula and name for a hydrate that is 14 % water and 85.2 % barium chloride.
BaCl2 . 2H2O
Do the question which is sample 3 on the hydrates slide (only part c) (hint: MOLES matters in this case because of comparison)
c) 52 kg
What does saturated mean
when a solution is unable to absorb or dissolve any more of a solute at a given temperature and pressure
