Double Displacement Reactions Flashcards
What happens during a double displacement reaction?
○ Metal ions of 2 ionic compounds
○ Swap the non-metals they are bonded to
What is the general equation for Double displacement reactions?
M1-NM1 + M2-NM2 🡪 M2-NM1 + M1-NM2
What do double displacement reactions involve?
○ Ions in solution that react together to form a solid, gas or liquid (water)
What is the name of the solid product formed from a
double displacement reaction?
A precipitate
When can Double displacement reactions be a precipitation reaction?
○ 2 solutions of ions (soluble substances) are mixed together and an insoluble substance (precipitate) is formed
What is an Ionic equation?
a chemical equation in which the electrolytes in an aqueous solution are expressed as dissociated ions.
What is a net ionic equation?
A chemical equation in which only those ions undergoing chemical changes during the course of the reaction are represented.
Kiarra wants to prepare a 75.0mL solution of 0.200mol/L
potassium carbonate. Outline a series of steps that she
should follow. Include calculations & specialized
equipment. (7 mark question)
(Before writing steps calculate the mass of potassium carbonate by finding the number of moles in it first)
1) Measure 2.07 g of K2CO3 on a scale
2) Grab a volumetric flask
3) Pour the K2CO3 into a 75.0 mL volumetric flask
4) Swirl and dissolve the K2CO3 in a small amount of water
5) Add additional water to the solution until you reach the mark on the volumetric flask
