Hyde Begins To Dominate Jekyll Flashcards
As the evil in Jekyll begins to consume him, Jekyll loses hold of his “original and better self”
This shows that Hyde is slowing beginning to consume Jekyll from within and Jekyll is slowly losing control of his old self.
Utterson describes a visit to Jekyll’s property in which he was allowed to enter the lab for the first time. He explains “even in the house the fog began to lie thickly”
This is another example of how Hyde is starting to consume Jekyll slowly with reference to the fog slowly creeping in. It shows that Hyde has broken through the civilised self of Jekyll and is beginning to dominate his nature.
Utterson also describes Jekyll’s house as having a “distasteful sense of strangeness”
This shows that Jekyll’s property is not normal and is not what it once was, this also shows that Jekyll has changed and is not his civilised self. The idea is heightened as if the environment has creeped into the supernatural world when Jekyll turns into Hyde.
