What did all people theoretically belong to
The Catholic church and were under the jurisdiction of the Pope in Rome
What did religion do for people
Lives were lived and regulated according to the churches major ceremonies
provided focus of popular entertainment e.g. festivals
guilds and confraternities offered charity, good fellowship and the chance for ordinary people to contribute to the good of the local community
