16
Q

Intact Females

A

May present more male-like behaviors - lifting leg and rougher play
Increased estrogen level during heat can lead to more guarding behavior
False pregnancy - may show biological signs of being pregnant including nesting and guarding

17
Q

Female Estrous Cycle

A

Anestrus
Proestrus
Estrus
Dieestrus

18
Q

Anestrus

A

Compromises most of female’s reproductive cycle
90-150 days

Endometrial repair - normal vulva - not receptive to males - no discharge - hormones return to normal levels

19
Q

Proestrus

A

Begin to notice changes - when dog is in “heat”
3-17 days, averages 9 days

Swollen vulva - vaginal discharge - not receptive to males - males are attracted

20
Q

Estrus

A

Ovulation occurs, estrogen drops and progesterone rises
Only point she can become pregnant

3-21 days
Receptive to males - flagging - decrease in vaginal discharge

21
Q

Diestrus

A

Progesterone is dominant
60-63 days - regardless if became pregnant or not

Not receptive to males

22
Q

Sterilization Types

A
  1. Neuter - surgical castration
  2. Spay - removal of uterus and ovaries
  3. Ovariectomy - removal of just ovaries
  4. Hysterectomy - removal of uterus and part of cervix - ovaries remain - still cycle
  5. Tubal ligation - tubes are tied - will still cycle
  6. Vasectomy
  7. Chemical castration
23
Q

Symptoms of ill Health

A

Vomiting - diarrhea - scooting - lethargy - discharge (eyes/nose) - coughing/sneezing - oozing sores - excessive scratching - excessive head shaking - injury - lameness
