Hurricaine Katrina Flashcards
What was Hurricaine Katrina and where did it affect?
Hurricane Katrina began as a very low pressure weather system, which strengthened to become a tropical storm and eventually a hurricane as it moved west and neared the Florida coast on the evening of 25 August 2005.
Impacts of Hurricane Katrina?
After crossing southern Florida - where it left some 100,000 homes without power
At least 1,836 people died in the actual hurricane and in the subsequent floods and total property damage was estimated at $81 billion.
Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring regions became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. However, the worst property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as all Mississippi beachfront towns, which were flooded over 90% in hours, as boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inlan
18 schools were destroyed and another 74 were badly damaged.
Over 1 million houses were damaged along the Gulf coast. 300,000 homes were destroyed by the flood
Secondary impacts of Hurricaine Katrina?
Local people lost around 230,000 jobs as a direct consequence of the hurricane putting factories and businesses out of business. Prices for oil and petrol went up.
Looting took place in many areas and the US National Guard had to be called up to keep the peace.
Responses
Tens of thousands of volunteers and troops responded or were deployed to the disaster; most in the affected area but also throughout the U.S. at shelters set up in at least 19 states.
Since the hurricane passed through, the governors of Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana; as well as California and Texas, collectively called to duty more than 10,000 guard troops.
Céline Dion, the Canadian singer, also donated $1 million.
