humidity, condensation, and clouds - II Flashcards
How is dew formed?
earth’s surface cools down, the air touching earth’s surface cools to dew point temperature, earth’s surface cools below earth’s temperature, water vapor forms droplets on surface
What is dew point temperature’s relationship with temperature?
dewpoint temperature is always less than or equal to temperature, dew point falls with temperature
What does a higher dew point temperature indicate?
the air contains more moisture
What is frost point temperature?
when dew point temperature falls below freezing (0°C), frost forms instead of dew
What is radiation fog?
fog produced by radiational cooling, formed at night with little to no wind
What is advection fog?
fog produced when warm, moist air goes over cool surfaces. the air temperature drops todew point and forms fog
What is upslope fog?
fog produced when moist air flows up along an elevated plain, hill, or mountain
What is evaporation fog?
fog formed when mixing warm unsaturated air with cool unsaturated air. after mixing, air becomes saturated and forms fog.
What is the classification “cirro”?
high clouds, 6-7 km
What is the classification “alto”?
middle clouds, 2-7 km
What is the classification “low”?
low clouds below 2 km
What is the classification “strato”?
layered clouds
What is the classification “cumulo”?
convective clouds
Write down the cloud type chart.
cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, cirrus
altostratus, altocumulus, x
stratus and nimbostratus, stratocumulus, x
