Humans as geomorphic agents (20th jan) Hooke. Flashcards
Research showing… has led scientists to propose..
Research showing the increasing modification of the landscape has led scientists to propose that humans are the biggest geomorphic agents on the planet.
Hooke evaluated… to determine whether..
Hooke evaluated historical evidence to determine whether human impacts on the landscape have always been as high as current, and if humans are the biggest geomorphic agent.
Hooke finds that..(human impact..)
Hooke finds that the human impact on the landscape has increased over the years due to agriculture and the need to develop e.g roads buildings and mining.
In USA humans move 30 tonnes of earth per capita. 6 tonnes world average.
Recent trends in land movement..
Intentional movement of agricultural land has increased.
Unintentional (not intended as a part of agriculture) has decreased recently.
Both have positive trends over 1000years. Increasing population = better technology.
The results show…
As humans population increased the movement of land increases along with the drive for technology, intentional land movement increasing.
In two minds about the argument (mouths to feed)
Population rise will always be an issue, can’t be stopped short term. I agree that humans impact on the landscape will have detrimental effects but with more mouths to feed and constant technological advances, the issue will remain unsolved.
