- Every person has innate tendency to achieve their full potential - this is what we strive towards.
What do humanists believe psychology should be?
subjective
What is Maslow’s hierarchy needs of needs based on?
- What motivates people?
What must happen before we meet self-actualisation?
we must meet lower deficiency needs
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
- physiological
- safety
- love/ belonging
- esteem
- self-actualisation
Why can’t everyone self-actualise?

- Way a person sees themselves.
What must happen for personal growth to be achieved?
a persons concept of self must be equivalent to ideal self.

fit between self and ideal self
When does incongruence occur?
if the gap is too big which means self-actualisation isn’t possible leading to negative feelings.
what is the point of client centred therapy - Rogers
- To reduce the gap.
Where do many adult issues come from?
childhood root causes.
- Can be explained by lack of unconditional positive regard from out parents.
What is a therapists job?
give clients unconditional positive regard they failed to receive as a child
Strengths
- Doesn’t break up behaviour and experience into smaller components like other theories.
- Sees all people as good and free to work towards reaching their potential
Limitations
- Vague and abstract ideas
- Many humanistic ideas would be more associated with individualist cultures in the West than Collectivist cultures
