Trafficking
- victims are not permitted to leave upon arrival at their destination
- does not require travel like smuggling does
Smuggling
- involves a person voluntarily requesting or hiring another to covertly transport them across on international border
- after entry, not forced to stay
Coercion
the practice of forcing another party to act in an involuntary manner by use of imitation or threats or some other form of pressure or force
UN Trafficking Protocol
- an international agreement under the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC); December 25th, 2003
- purpose -> to facilitate international cooperation in investigating and prosecuting human trafficking and to protect and assist victims
- 180 parties
Exploitation
- the action of treating s/o unfairly in order to benefit from their work (taking unfair advantage)
- comes in many forms
Sex Trafficking
the trade of humans for sexual intercourse
Prostitution
- the business or practice of engaging in sexual relations in exchange for payment
- countries in Nevada legalized prostitution
- estimates place the rev. generated by prostitution worldwide to be over $100 bill
Procuring
- the facilitation of a prostitute/sex worker in the arrangement of a sex act w/ a costumer
- a procurer (pimp=male, madam=female) is an agent for prostitutes who collects part of their earnings
Forms of Prostitution
can take place at client´s home, hotel room, the escort´s room, on the street, in public, etc.
Brothel
establishments specifically dedicated to prostitution - clients visit and pay fr sex on premises
Consequences of Prostitution
- STDs
- mental health issues (depression, anxiety, PTSD)
- many develop alcohol or drug addictions and abusive habits
Forced Marriage
- marriage where one or more are married w/o freely given consent
- qualifies as a form of human trafficking
- if the bride is treated as a domestic servant > labor trafficking
Honor Killing
- aka shame killing
- the homicide of the member of a family by other members, due to the belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family, or has violated the principles of a community or a religion
Female Genital Mutilation
- the ritual removal of some or all of the external female genitalia
- concentrated in African countries - Somalia, Egypt, Indonesia, and Yemen and parts of Asia and the Middle East
- most girls are cut before the age of 5
Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children
CSEC
- any financial transaction that involves the sexual exploitation of a child, such as the prostitution of children and child pornography
- includes CST
