Human Systems Vocab Flashcards
IFR ( Infant Mortality Rate )
an estimate of the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. This rate is often used as an indicator to measure the health and well-being of a nation, because factors affecting the health of entire populations can also impact the mortality rate of infants.
TFR ( Total Fertility Rate )
represents the number of children that would be born to a woman if she were to live to the end of her childbearing years and bear children in accordance with current age
Push and Pull Factors
The push factor involves a force which acts to drive people away from a place and the pull factor is what draws them to a new location.
Population Density
the number of individuals occupying an area in relation to the size of that area.
Population distribution

CMR ( Child Mortality Rate )
refers to the death of infants and children under the age of five.
Life Expectancy
the average period that a person may expect to live.
Literacy Rate
The ability to read and write at a specified age
Demographic Transition Model
refers to the transition from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as a country develops from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system.
Population Pyramid
a graphical illustration that shows the distribution of various age groups in a population (typically that of a country or region of the world), which forms the shape of a pyramid when the population is growing.
Urban sprawl
the uncontrolled expansion of urban areas.
Suburbs
an outlying district of a city, especially a residential one.
Suburbanization
the growth of areas on the fringes of cities. It is one of the many causes of the increase in urban sprawl.
Urbanization
the process by which towns and cities are formed and become larger as more and more people begin living and working in central areas
Culture
The sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. Culture is transmitted, through language, material objects, ritual, institutions, and art, from one generation to the next.
