Human Sexual Response Flashcards
4 phases of human sexual response
Excitation
Plateau
Orgasm
Resolution
The 2 physiologic process responsible for most of the human sexual response in men and women
Vasocongestion
Myotonia
examples of myotonia in women
nipples erect
female orgasmic platform
outer third of vagina thickens, swells. without it, no orgasm occurs
plateau in males
Bulbourethral glands / cowper’s glands secrete fluid (may contain live sperm)
2 stages of orgasm in men
- contraction of seminal vesicles, vas deferens and prostate
- contraction of urethra and penis: ejaculation
Retrograde ejaculation
In some cases, the urinary valve that opens into the bladder is open as the semen heads toward the urethra. Semen flows into bladder instead (path of least resistance).
More common in men with MS or diabetes, and in men with history of bladder/ prostate surgery
Men: spinal reflexes in erection
sacral spinal cord responds to stimulation, sends message via parasympathetic to relax the penile arteries: more blood flows to penis.
Men: spinal reflexes in ejaculation
This occurs higher in spinal cord because sympathetic trunk is higher.
message to sympathetic system causes muscle contractions.
