Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The UDHR was created by the United Nations and was created to start the development of human rights around the world.
United Nations
A peace organization that was created to never let something like the holocaust happen ever again. The United Nations have no military, so instead, they go after countries’ economies.
Pyramid of Hate
It is a way to visually depict how the seeds of hate can grow from biased behaviors to violence and even genocide, even though the lowest layer is normally people joking it still holds up the higher levels on the pyramid.
Indian Removal Act
Native Americans were forced off their land so white US citizens could have more land. The Native Americans weren’t given anything for their land and they also had to leave almost everything behind, COngress told the white people and Andrew Jackson that they could do what they were doing but they did it anyways.
Andrew Jackson
Started the Indian Removal Act. Andrew Jackson was enforcing the Act, and also raffing of the natives land and not giving them anything.
Trail of Tears
The trails that the Native Americans took when they were forced off their land and fired to move west of the Mississippi River. walking the trail took three months and was very dangerous, over 100,000 natives died during the Removal Act.
Discrimination
Unfair to a person or group based on their identity (Race, Religion, Culture, Gender) such as in a school, job, etc.
Prejudice
Negative attitudes toward a particular group are based on their identity.
Japanese Internment Camp
The camps Japanese-Americans were put into after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, even though they didn’t do anything. The camps were in isolated deserts, there were 100,000 people in the camps. 1/2 were children and about 2/3 of the people were American citizens. They lost everything and got very little in return many years later. In the camps, the people were dehumanized, mistreated, and had very small, terrible living areas.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Declared war on Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he also supported to JAP internment camps. He also was the only president to be elected 4 terms, those terms were during WWII and the Great Depression.
Attack on Pearl Harbor
When Japan bombed the Naval base in Hawaii, this act caused the U.S. to join WWII and go to war with Japan. 2300 Americans were killed and 8 battleships were sunk in 2 hours, this all happened on December 7, 1941.
Bias
Negative thoughts or ideas about or against a certain group based on differences, real or imagined without any factual basis.
Scapegoating
The act of blaming an entire group for the actions of one or a few.
Apartheid
Separateness, a system that separated people based on their race and skin color, in South Africa there were laws that forced black and white people to work and live apart from each other.
Segregation
Separating two or more groups of people by race, skin color, or religion happens because one race/religion/people of the same skin color think they are superior and deserve more than the other.
Nelson Mandela
The first-ever black president of South Africa, he was also a civil rights activist and he was a leading member of the ANC.
F.W. de Klerk
Worked with Nelson Mandela to end the apartheid in South Africa, after being elected he got Nelson out of prison and they later shared the noble peace prize.
African National Congress
Fought against the apartheid, they also fought to get better rights for native Africans. This organization was eventually made illegal by the government at the time, but it continued anyways, Nelson Mandela was one of the main leaders in it.
Political Cartoon
A cartoon about a political person, event, institution, or idea usually reflects the cartoonist’s values or opinions. Political Cartoons are trying to convince you about something, and see how they see things. They are mainly visual, with a few words. They normally have a serious message behind them.
Antisemitism
Racism or prejudice against Jews. This term is usually used when talking about WWII and the Holocaust.
Patriotism
The quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country ex. joining the army, buying war bonds, having an American flag hanging on their front porch, etc.
Nationalism
Identification with one’s own nation and support for its interests especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of the other nations.
Treaty of Versailles
A document signed between Germany and the Allied Powers following WWI that officially ended WWI and would also start WWII.
World War 1
Known as The War To End All Wars, 135 countries were involved and was between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. 15 million people died. This war used new technology and was not what anyone expected.
