- the belief that they will be rewarded for their actions in this life or the afterlife - they believe that they are doing it for God - they believe that their political views should be shared by everyone - they are influenced or radicalised by others - some form of disillusionment with society

when someone's faith is so important to them that they feel justified in acting in extreme ways in order to try and make others share the same beliefs as them

example of Muslim extremism?
In January 2015, gunmen shot 12 people dead in a terrorist attack at the Paris office of the French office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The magazine staff were targeted because they had published cartoon images of the Prophet Muhammad. Most Muslims believe that it is prohibited to make images of the prophet Muhammad, as images and statues are thought to encourage the worship of idols, this is a great sin in Islam known as shirk. The actions of the terrorists received condemnation around the world, including from Muslim leaders. People expressed their solidarity with the phrase "je suis Charlie"

example of extremism against Muslims?
2 consecutive mass shootings occurred at mosques in a terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand during the Friday prayer on the 15th March 2019. The attack was carried out by a single gunman who entered both mosques. He killed 51 people and injured 40. The 28 year old gunman was described as a white supremacist and far right. He was given a sentence of life without Parole- which is the first time that sentence had been handed down in New Zealand.

examples of Christian extremism?
there are several cases of anti-abortion violence taking place in the USA where abortion clinics have been attacked by extreme Christians who believe that only God has the right to take a life. In the most extreme cases, some members of staff working at abortion clinics in the US have been killed by Christian terrorists. In 2015, Robert Lewis Dear shot and killed 3 people and injured 9 more at the planned parenthood clinic in Colorado. Planned Parenthood advises people on contraception and other issues of sexual health as well as abortion. He believed the bible condemns abortions and by attacking people who worked in abortion clinics he was doing "Gods work"

Westbro baptist church (WBC) is an American hyper-calvinist hate group. It is known for engaging in homophobic and anti American pickets as well as hate speech against atheists, Jews, Muslims, transgender people and most other christians. It has been denounced by the baptist church and all other mainstream christian denominations. WBC has been involved in actions against gay people since 1989, when it sought a crackdown in homosexual activity in addition to conducting anti-gay protests at military funerals, the organisations pickets celebrity funerals and public events. Protests have been held against Jews, Mormons and catholics.

at least 28 were killed as militant groups attacked Christian villages in Nigeria and 5 christians were executed at the hands of extremists in Nigeria over Christmas 2020.

In Israel, a Jewish extremist who was convicted of 3 counts of murder for throwing a firebomb that killed three members of a Palestinian family has been sentenced to 3 life terms in prison. The Judges in their ruling said that 26 year old Ben Uliel acted out of racist ideology and never expressed remorse.

The holocaust was the systematic murder of Europe's Jews by the Nazis during the second world war, This programme of targeted mass murder was a large part of the Nazi's broader plans to create a new world order based on their ideology. The process of persecution escalated in the late 1930s before developing into a campaign of mass murder during the course of the second world war. Jewish people sent to concentration camps were incarcerated alongside hundreds of thousands of others who had been enslaved and victimised by the Nazis, including political opponents, homosexuals, Poles and Soviet prisoners of war and others who were killed or died in camps as a result of neglect, starvation or disease.
