Q

Augustine’s theodicy

A

evil is not God’s fault but the result of human choice to misuse free will. God sets out how a person should act and deliberately disobeying God’s rules is why evil happens

Q

Irenaeus’ theodicy

A

The purpose of evil and suffering is to help us to develop into good and moral people. God made humans in his image but that does not mean humans are perfect. Evil and suffering develop faith and compassion. God allows people to carry out acts of moral evil to learn from their mistakes. this also allows those affected to learn forgiveness

Q

summarise the parable of the sheep and the goats

A

Christians believe there will be a day of judgement, they will be judged by god on the quality of their lives. on this day Jesus will return to earth in a second coming and human life on earth will end forever. This belief is known as Parousia.
when Jesus returns to earth, everyone will be gathered before him and he will separate people from each other like a shepherd. Those who helped others will go on his right and will go to heaven, they are the sheep. those who did not help others will go on his left and will go to Hell

71
Q

what does Jesus say will happen to people after he judges them?

A

“they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life”

72
Q

why did the sheep go to heaven?

A

“for i was hungry and you gave me something to eat, i was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, i was a stranger and you invited me in, i needed clothes and you clothed me, i was sick and you looked after me, i was in prison and you visited me” the sheep did not do this directly to Jesus but by helping others they helped Jesus.

73
Q

why did the goats go to hell?

A

“for i was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, i was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, i was a stranger and you did not invite me in, i needed clothes and you did not clothe me, i was sick and you did not look after me, i was in prison and you did not visit me”. The goats did not directly not do these things to Jesus, but they did not do them to those who needed them so by extension they did not do them to Jesus

74
Q

summarise the parable of Lazarus and the rich man

A

There was a rich man who lived in luxury and there was a poor beggar named Lazarus who lived outside his gate, Lazarus suffered greatly and eventually died. The rich man also died. Lazarus went to heaven where he received his reward for all his suffering while the rich man went to hell where he would suffer for eternity. The rich man begged Abraham to bring Lazarus back to life so Lazarus could go and warn his brothers so that they would not make the mistakes he did and end up in hell as well

75
Q

what does the parable of Lazarus and the rich man show?

A

that there is a clear divide between those who will be rewarded in heaven and those who will be punished in hell, and that the afterlife is only achieved by good faith and good actions regardless of wealth or success in earthly life
