Human Response to the Environment Flashcards
CNS consists of
Brain and spinal cord
PNS consists of
Network of nerves
Controls all involuntary actions
Autonomic nervous system
Describe the sympathetic system
Brings about action and stimulates parts of the body
Describe the parasympathetic system
Slows down parts of the body
3 types of neurons
Motor neuron
Sensory neuron
Interneuron
Function of a sensory neuron
Conducts nerve impulses from the receptor towards the spinal cord and brain
Function of motor neuron
conducts nerve impulses away from the brain and spinal cord towards the effector
Describe a synapse
A microscopic gap between the end of an axon of one neuron and the dendrite of another neuron
Part of the brain that controls temperature
Hypothalamus
Part of the brain that joins the 2 hemispheres
Corpus Callosum
Part of the brain that controls involuntary muscle movements
Medulla Oblongata
Part of the Brain that controls voluntary muscle movements
Cerebrum
Part of the brain that regulates posture and balance
Cerebellum
Reflex Arc
The path taken by an impulse in response to a stimulus
Cones are responsible for…..
Colour vision and only function in bright light conditions
Rods are responsible for…..
Black and white vision and the perception of movement
Area of clearest vision
Yellow spot
Function of conjunctiva
Thin transparent membrane that protects the eye
Describe the refraction of light rays by the cornea and the lens
Light rays enter the eye passing through the cornea, aqueous humour, pupil, lens, the vitreous humour and fall on the retina. The cornea refracts the most light rays and the lens refracts and focuses light sharply onto the retina
