What is a job description?
The main purpose of a job description is to define the main duties and responsibilities of the job. It should include the title of the job, conditions and hours of work, the person who the job holder reports, etc.
What is person specification?
It’s purpose is to identify what an ideal applicant should have in terms of personal qualities, knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience
What is a contract of employment?
It sets out the rights and duties of both the employee and employer. It’s the law that any full time employee should receive it within 8 weeks of employment. It must include: name of employer and employee, hours of work, agreed rated and payment method, length of paid holiday entitlement and length of period of notice to be given.
What are the methods of recruitment?
External - outside the business
Internal - inside the business
What are 3 advantages of internal recruitment ?
- Quicker. This means that because it’s in the business, you don’t have to go through the hassle of getting someone outside the business, saving time.
- It’s cheaper than advertising externally. This means that you don’t have to spend as much on advertising the job to others as it’s only to those in the business, saving money.

What are 3 disadvantages of internal recruitment?
- Range of applicants is limited. This means the ideal applicant might not be as good as one outside the business.
- Doesn’t bring in new ideas. This means that the business doesn’t get any new skills as they would from someone outside the business. there’s no competitive edge.
- The newly appointed employee may need training. This means that the employee may need training for his new role. Loss of money.
What are 3 advantages of external recruitment?
- Wide range of applicants. This means that there are more high quality applicants. More valuable employee
- Brings in new skills and ideas. This means the business gets new skills and ideas from the newly chosen employee. Competitive edge

What are 3 disadvantages of external recruitment?
- Expensive.
- Slower than internal.
- Induction training required. This means that the new employee will need induction training to get familiar with the business

What are 3 advantages of using social media as a recruitment method?
- It’s a cheaper method of advertising than stuff like newspapers. This means that because it’s on social media, it costs little to nothing to make a job application on it. Saves money
- Allows employer to search applicants online profiles. This means that the employer can get a better understanding of what the employee is like. Higher quality employee.
- Applicants forms are done online. This means it’s easier for applicants to apply info on the job. More efficient method.
What are 3 disadvantages of using social media as a recruitment method?
- Negative comments made. This means that the business will get mean comments online.
- Dealing with online queries from applicants can be very time consuming. This means that because there’s so many applicants, the business will have to look through every single one. Lost time
- Too many without the necessary skills and qualifications apply for the post. This means that there’s a lot of low quality applicants. Possible less valuable employee chosen
What are the legal controls on recruitment in race?
- People of all races, nationalities or ethnic origin must be treated equally
- In northern Ireland this also applies to travelers
- People of all races, colours etc.. must be treated equally in training
What are the legal controls on recruitment in terms of religion?
- People from all religions must have equal opportunities
- Employers must create a neutral area in the workplace - no bias towards a religion
- Employers must register with the equality commission if there’s over 10 employees
What are the legal controls of recruitment in terms of disability?
- Disabled people must have the same opportunities as other people in terms of recruitment, training and selection
- Reasonable adjustments must be made (eg: disabled toilets and ramps)
What are the legal controls of recruitment in terms of gender?
- Men and women must have the same opportunities as one another
- The business must make sure that men and women get equal pay for equal value of work
- No sexual harassment is allowed
