Human Reproduction(Male) Flashcards
Define gametogensis
The reproductive events in humans include the formation of gametes it is called gameotogenesis
In male sperms are produced through spermatogenesis
In female ovum is produced through oogenesis
Define insemination
The transfer of sperms into the female genital tract
Define Fertilisation what does it lead to
The fusion of male and female gametes is called Fertilisation
It leads to formation of zygote
Event of Fertilisation is followed by
Fertilisation is followed by the formation and development of blastocyst and it’s attachment to the uterine wall
What is implantation
The attachment of the blastocyst to the uterine wall is called implantation
Define gestation
It is the period of embryonic development
Define Parturation
The delivery of the baby is called parturition
When can reproductive events begin to occur?
Reproductive events can begin to occur after puberty
Location of the male reproductive system
Located in the pelvis region or extra abdominal
What are the constituents of the male reproductive system
A pair of testes along with accessory ducts glands and external genitalia
Differences between make and female reproductive events
There is a vast difference as sperms formation continues even in old men but the production of ovum ceases in older women generally around the age of 50
Location of testis
They are located outside the abdominal cavity within a pouch called scrotum
Function of the scrotum
The scrotum helps in maintaining the low temp of the testis which is generally 2-2.5°C lower than that of the normal internal body temp necessary for spermatogenesis
Shape and size of testis
The testis are oval in shape with a length of about 4-5 cm and a width for about 2-3 cm
Coverings of the testis
The testis is covered by a dense covering
3 layered
Tunica vaginalis outer
Tunica albuginia middle
Tunica vasculosa inner
What are testicular lobules
How many are present in a single testis
Each testis has about 250 compartments called testicular lobules
Each lobule contains about 1-3 highly coiled seminiferous tubules
Define seminiferous tubules and write it’s constituents
Seminiferous tubules are highly coiled tubules present in the testicular lobules in which sperms are produced
Each seminiferous tubule is lined on its inside by two types of cells called male germ cell (spermatogonia) and Sertoli cells
Function of spermatogonia and Sertoli cells
The male germ cell (spermstogonia) undergoes meiotic division finally leading to sperm formation while sertoli cells provide nutrition to the germ cells
Cells / space outside seminiferous tubules
The region outside seminiferous tubules is called interstitial spaces which contains small blood vessels and interstitial cells or Leydig cells
Function of leydig cells
They synthesise and secrete testicular hormones called androgens
Name all the male sex accessory ducts
The male sex accessory ducts include the vas deferens the rete testis the epididymis and Vasa efferentia
Location of epididymis
It is located along the posterior surface of each testis
Functions of accessory ducts
These ducts store and transport the sperms from the testis to the outside through urethra
What is urethral meatus
The urethra originated from the urinary bladder and extends through the penis to its external opening called urethral meatus
When are mature sperms present
Mature sperms are present only after epididymis
Path of sperm
The seminiferous tubules
Rete testis
Vasa efferentia
Epididymis
Vas deferens
Seminal vesicle secretion
Urethra as ejaculatory duct
What is penis
What is it composed of
How does it facilitate insemination
The penis is the male external genitalia
It is made up of special tissues that help in the Erection of the penis to facilitate insemination
What is penis ending called
What covers it
The enlarged end of the penis is called the glans penis it is covered by a loose fold of skin called foreskin
Name the male accessory glands
Includes paired seminal vesicle a prostate gland and paired bulbourethral gland
What is seminal plasma what are its constituents
Secretion of the accessory glands constituent the seminal plasma which is rich in fructose calcium and certain enzymes
Function of the bulbourethral gland
The secretion of the bulbourethral gland helps in the lubrication of the penis
