Human reproduction Flashcards
Sexual Reproduction
Two sex cells (gametes) combine Gametes only have 1 copy of each chromosome Variation- features from both parents Only in reproductive organs Slow
Asexual reproduction
One parent
Used when plants/ animals need to replace cells
When cell divides so cells are identical to original (clones)
PMAT x1
Fast
Internal Fertilization
Reptiles, mammals, birds
Transferring sperm to female without exposing to external environment
Requires more energy
External fertilization
Less energy
More numbers
LH and FSH secreted by what and what do they do?
Anterior pituitary gland
LH-stimulates release of egg (day14)
FSH-causes egg to develop, stimulates ovaries to produce estrogen
Estrogen and progesterone secreted by what and what do they do?
Secreted by ovary
Estrogen- causes uterus lining to thicken
Progesterone-maintains thickened lining
Female secondary sexual characteristics
Estrogen caused onset of puberty
Vagina, pelvis and uterus grow larger Vagina begins to secrete fluid Breasts grow larger Pubic+ armpit hair grow Fat deposited under skin of buttocks and thighs
Male secondary sexual characteristics
Testosterone causes onset of puberty
Penis and testes grow larger Prostate gland and seminal vesicles begin to secrete fluid Larynx grows larger-deeper voice Pubic+ facial+ armpit hair grow Skeletal muscles grow larger
Where is site of fertilization?
Fallopian tubes
Which structures involved with labor and delivery?
Uterus, cervix, vagina
3 cycles?
Ovarian, hormonal, menstrual
What does corpus luteum secrete?
Estrogen+ progesterone
Spermatozoan?
Oocyte?
Follicle?
Sperm
Egg
Surrounding, nurturing egg
Fertilization and implantation
The sperm travels through the cervix (uterus opening) uterus contractions assist sperm. (Resident cells attack sperm)
Then travel up Fallopian tube.
Then sperm burrow in egg-attach to special sperm receptors. Then 1sperm burrows and fertilizes egg.
Inside egg-male and female genetic material combine
Embryo-2-4 cells. Moves Along tube
-Zygote travels to uterus to implant
Embryo embeds in uterine lining (endometrium) and blastocyst sheds its surrounding membrane.
