Define Adolescence?
Adolescence is the stage in life between childhood and adulthood.
Define Puberty?
Puberty is the physical changes that occur in the body which prepare it for reproduction.
What are the five changes which occur in a male body?
- Reproductive organs grow and start to produce gametes (Sperm cells.)
- Increase in muscle production (Body shape changes.)
- Hair grows in different places.
- Pitch of voice deepens.
- Spots \ acne
What are the five changes which occur in a female body?
- Change in body shape (hips) hormones control where fat is laid down.
- Breasts grow and develop
- Change in hair patterns and hair in different places (Pubic hair.)
- Periods due to egg release from the ovary every month.
- Spots \ acne
What causes these changes?
Hormones (Chemical messengers.)
What is the hormone predominately found in males?
Testosterone.
What is the Hormone predominately found in females?
Oestrogen.
What is the purpose of these changes?
To prepare the body for reproduction and signal that the body is ready for reproduction.
What part of the sperm cell contains the nucleus?
Head.
What part of the sperm cell contains lots of mitochondria?
Neck.
Where is the nucleus in an egg cell?
The centre.
What are Gametes?
Gametes are specialised cells involved in reproduction.
Define fertilisation?
Fertilisation is the process when an egg cell and a sperm cell fuse together.
What happens to a fertilised egg?
Firstly, it divides into an embryo. It will then divide and grow even further into a foetus. It is then released from the females body creating a fully formed baby.
What is the function of the testes?
It makes sperm cells and testosterone.
