29
Q

What do Conservative and Liberal Protestants believe about divorce?

A

They accept divorce in the way that vows are like contracts and of they are broken then the marriage has died. In this case re-marriage is okay. They believe in the lesser of two evils and that divorce is evil but so is the emotional pain caused by an unhealthy relationship. Liberal Protestants would also accept divorce of it maximises agape.

30
Q

What do Roman Catholic believe about divorce?

A

They completely reject it and believe that a marriage is binding until a partner dies. They believe it’s impossible to end a marriage because of what Jesus taught in Mark 10:9.
However they believe that of the marriage was untrue then you can get an annulment.

31
Q

What qualifies as a untrue marriage?

A

. Lack of consent
. Lack of judgement (someone unaware of what marriage involves)
. An inability to carry out duties of marriage (refusal to have sex)
. Lack of intention (if one partner at the time intended not to have children)

A

“God wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality”

33
Q

Quote for sexual purity 2?

A

“Do you not know your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”

34
Q

Conservative Protestants view on Sex before marriage?

A

They are against it. Baptist church USA ‘true love waits campaign’ - remain chaste. However it could be argued that if a couple were planning on marriage and a sexual act resulted in the maximum amount of agape then this could be prohibited. Joseph Fletcher contradicts this by saying “no sexual act between persons competent to give mutual consent should be prohibited”.

35
Q

Roman Catholics view on sex before marriage?

A

Reject it. “The sexual act must take place exclusively within marriage. Outside marriage it always constitutes a grave sin”. Sex is for procreation and since a child needs a father and mother to achieve eudaimonia that requires a life long commitment like marriage. Natural law says you need stable marriage and family life to achieve order society.

36
Q

What is meant by Chastity?

A

The act of saving yourself sexually until marriage. No sex outside marriage.

37
Q

38
Q

Roman Catholic quote about sexual intercourse in marriage?

A
  1. “Unites the couple as one in love. Procreate it enables the couple to procreate and have children”

2.”Any action which either before at the moment or after sexual intercourse is specifically intended to prevent procreation whether as an end or as a means is to be condemned”.

39
Q

What do Conservative Protestants believe about contraception?

A

They are against it. It is wrong to prevent life and in a way is almost murder and go said thou shall not murder.
Gos told Adam and Eve “go forth and multiply” god intends for procreation, however contraception isn’t mentioned in the bible so it can’t be wrong.

40
Q

What do Liberal Protestants think about contraception?

A

Reject the teaching of natural law and that sex has to result in a pregnancy. Sex should be unitive but doesn’t have to be procreative. It’s okay to use their conscience to make decisions about limiting the number of children they produce. Some liberal Protestants would argue that sex without having to worry about pregnancy produces more agape. Having a child that is unwanted is evil so it’s the lesser of two evils.

41
Q

What does the Church of England say about contraception?

A

“The Church of England does not regard the use of contraception as a sin. The decision was laid by god upon the consciences of parents”

Q

What do Roman Catholics and Conservative Protestants believe about homosexuality?

A

They believe that god created Adam and Eve to be partners to each other there for sexual partners should be male and female and homosexuality is “intrinsically disordered” by Vatican proclamation. The church does not believe that homosexual orientation is a sin but homosexual acts are wrong and those who have homosexual orientations should remain celibate.

47
Q

What do liberal Protestants believe about homosexuality?

A

They reject the interpretations of the bible and believe that those beliefs were from a different time.
