Q

Explain two different religious beliefs about sex. Refer to scripture or sacred writings in your answer.

A

Muslims believe that sex before marriage could lead to promiscuity and other evils like rape, and is haram. It is considered a serious sin, and is on the same level as adultery and rape. “The only way to protect all within society is to maintain a society where only a man and his wife share the act of sex”

Q

Explain Christian beliefs about the roles within marriage. Refer to scripture or sacred writings in your answer.

A

One christian belief is that women should obey their husbands within a marriage. “Wives, submit yourselves unto your husbands, as unto the lord”. Some traditional Christians believe that men are the head of the family and women should stay home and care for the children, meaning there isn’t equality between man and wife.
Another christian belief is that man and woman were made in God’s image, and that they should be treated equally and share responsibilities within the marriage. They believe they should respect each other’s roles and value both equally.

Q

Explain two contrasting religious beliefs about the roles within marriage. In your answer you should refer to the main religious tradition in Great Britain and one or more other religious traditions.

A

Some traditional Christians believe that husbands are the head of the family and are meant to provide for the family, whereas women should stay home and look after the children.
In contrast, Muslims believe that God created everyone to be equal, and that men and women should have the same religious and moral responsibilities. Women are not obligated to stay home and take care of the children.

Q

Explain two contrasting beliefs in contemporary society about divorce. In your answer you should refer to the main religious tradition in Great Britain and one or more other religious traditions.

Explain two reasons why there are different attitudes towards divorce in Christianity.

A

Liberal Christians will accept divorce, and say that it’s the lesser of two evils. Staying together may cause more harm than divorce, for example in marriages with violence, infidelity, etc. Jesus said ‘show love to one another’, therefore divorce can be regarded as the most loving thing in this situation.
Roman Catholics, however, believe that marriage is a sacrament and it can never be dissolved in God’s eyes. Divorce isn’t sanctioned by God, so the couple would still be married in His (and the Church’s) eyes. If a man were to divorce his wife and marry another woman, it would be regarded as adultery.

Q

Explain two religious teachings about gender prejudice. Refer to scripture or sacred writings in your answer.

A

Some Christians believe that men and women are equal, and say that ‘there is neither male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’. This argues for gender equality, because Jesus treated women as equals as well.
Other Christians believe that men are above women, in line with St Paul’s teachings. ‘I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man’. When a woman exercises her own will, she would get punished.

Q

Explain two contrasting religious beliefs about sex before marriage. In your answer you should refer to the main religious tradition in Great Britain and one or more other religious traditions.

A
One Islamic belief is that sex before marriage could lead to major sins such as rape, promiscuity, etc., therefore sex before marriage is seen as a major sin. "The only way to protect all within society is to maintain a society where only a man and his wife share the act of sex".
In contrast, some Christians accept that, for some people, sex before marriage is a valid expression of their love for each other, and therefore they don't class it as a sin.

Q

Explain two contrasting beliefs in contemporary society about homosexuality. In your answer you should refer to the main religious tradition in Great Britain and one or more other religious traditions.

A

Some Christians believe that the Bible is outdated, and can be interpreted to fit today’s society. Therefore, they would see homosexuality as acceptable. The Church of England also allows homosexuality.
In contrast, Islam teaches that homosexuality is haram (forbidden), and is against God’s will. It’s believed that God made man and woman in pairs, and that your soulmate is of the opposite sex. Endorsing in homosexuality would mean that you would never find your soulmate. ‘Must you, unlike other people, lust after males and abandon the wives that God has created for you?’

Q

Explain two contrasting beliefs about contraception. In your answer you should refer to the main religious tradition in Great Britain and one or more other religious traditions.

A

Roman Catholics only allow ‘natural’ birth control, which means only having sex during the infertile part of a woman’s monthly cycle - artificial methods of contraception aren’t allowed.
In contrast, liberal protestants often say that it’s acceptable to use both artificial and natural methods of contraception, as long as they’re not being used to encourage or permit promiscuity. Preventing other people getting STDs and unwanted pregnancies is seen as a form of agape.

Q

Explain two Christian beliefs about the roles of men and women in society today. Refer to scripture or sacred writings in your answer.

A

Some traditional Christians believe that husbands are the head of the family and are meant to provide for the family, whereas women should stay home and look after the children.
Other Christians see marriage as an equal partnership, where both husband and wife contribute equally to the marriage in order to strengthen family life. ‘There is neither Jew nor Gentile, nor slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’.

Q

Explain why some Christians oppose same-sex marriage in the UK.

A

Some Christians may oppose same-sex marriage because it is against God’s will. Genesis tells Christians to “be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Same-sex couples cannot reproduce, therefore it is not part of God’s plan.
Another reason that some may oppose same-sex marriage is that the Bible and the Church forbids it. The Bible says ‘do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman: that is detestable’.

Q

Explain two beliefs in Christianity about sexual relationships.

A

One Christian belief is that you should refrain from sex before marriage. Christians believe that ‘your bodies are temples’ and you should treat them with respect.
Another Christian belief is that promiscuity is forbidden. The Book of Corinthians says that ‘he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body’. This means having multiple sexual partners is immoral.

Q

Explain two contrasting religious beliefs in contemporary British society about sexual relationships before marriage.

A
Some Christians may accept that, for some people, sex before marriage is a valid expression of their love for each other, and therefore they don't class it as a sin.
In contrast, most Christians would see sex sexual relationships before marriage as unacceptable, and would say that 'every sexual act must be within the framework of marriage'. Abstinence until marriage encourages fidelity.

Q

Explain two contrasting Christian views on remarriage.

A

Roman Catholics will not allow remarriage in Church if their partner is alive. Someone who does remarry elsewhere is not allowed to take communion in a Catholic Church, as they are committing adultery. This is because in God’s eyes, they are still married to their first spouse.
Some other Christian Churches allow divorced people to remarry in Church if there is no prospect of reconciliation. This is because the most agapeistic action for the marriage partners, or the children of the family, may be to just divorce. They say that ‘till death do us part’ is the ideal which not everyone can keep.
