Chapter 4: human relations for self and organizational development.
● Man is a social being. It is an axiom that man becomes who he is through his interaction with
others.
● Human relations are the interactions that exist among individuals in a given setting especially a
workplace or professional setting.
● Human relations maybe interpersonal, it may be intra-group and it may be inter-group. It is
interpersonal when it involves individuals. It is intra-group when it involves a particular
interaction among members of a group. Is intergroup when it involves two or more groups
interacting.
● Forms of human relations are: conflict, exchange, cooperation and competition.
● Important skills in human relations include: conflict management, management of relationships,
teamwork skill, good decision making, communication skill, empathy, negotiation skill, emotional
intelligence, cultural competence and listening skill.
● Conflict exists when parties have incompatibility in interests and values. Conflict management is
the operationalization and response to the enforcement of strategy provisions of conflict
resolution agenda.
● Communication is the fundamental skill upon which all human relations skills are built.
● Empathy is a skill that allows one to genuinely be interested in understanding the feelings or
challenges of others.
● Emotional intelligence is a skill that enables one to be aware of his or her emotions and be able
to manage them.
● Human society is pluralistic.
● Listening skill allows an individual to objectively understand the situation and upon that make
objective decisions.
● All individuals are uniquely made but by socialization they begin to find out their weaknesses
and strengths.
● Important self related factors in human relations are also referred to as areas of emphasis in
human relations. They include self-esteem, self-awareness and disclosure, motivation, and
attitude.
● Self-esteem is one’s subjective sense of overall personal worth or value. For an individual to be
able to have a good human relation the person is expected to have a positive self-esteem.
● People with low self-esteem are less sure of their abilities and mostly doubt their
decision-making process. They cannot easily interact. They are generally timid and feel less
confident.
● In the words of Socrates “ man knows thyself”. This means to know oneself is the beginning of
wisdom.
● Self-awareness is one’s ability to perceive and understand the things that make him or her who
he or she is as an individual. Self-disclosure comes with self-awareness is achieved.
● The drive that leads human beings into doing a particular thing is motivation. Motivation is the
arousal of interest towards doing a particular thing.
● Motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic. It is intrinsic when one is internally propelled to do in a
particular thing and is extrinsic when an individual is doing a particular thing for gains or because
of an external force.
● Attitude is the judgement one has for a particular thing or issues.
● Ways of promoting good human relations include; appreciate diversity, mutual respect, be
emphatic, dialogue, maintain transparency and integrity, uphold tolerance, promoting Justice
and fairness, openness.
● Dialogue removes the tendency of hegemonism which is anti human relations.
● Tolerance is the quality of listening to other people’s views and opinions and being ready to
compromise when necessary
● Justice is the quality of giving each what is his or her due. Fairness promotes equal treatment of
people. Where there is existence of injustice or unfair treatment of people one expects to see

● Importance of good human relations are; high productivity, peaceful coexistence,
cross-pollination of ideas, general development, reduction in violence, good image, reduction in
the fear and bitterness, general sense of
