Demography
Branch of sociology. Studies characteristics of human population.
Population density
Is the number of individuals of a species per unit area at a given time.
-(important to know)different environments can sustain different population densities.
Populations are controlled by two factors
Birth rate
Death rate
What is birth rate?
Rate at which individuals produce off spring (based on fertility rates)
What is death rate
Rate at which individuals die
Carrying capacity
Earth can only support so many people before it reaches its carrying capacity
Geometric rate
1,2,4,8,17,32
If population is left unchecked will increase at a geometric rate
Linear rate
1,2,3,4,5
If pop uncheck food supply will grow at a linear rate
The population is checked through
Natural processes
Positive checks
Increase death rate
Positive checks include:
Disease
Famine
War
Preventative checks
Lowers birth rate
Preventative checks include:
Abortion
Birth control
Celibacy
What is Carrying Capacity
Maximum population that can be maintained w/0 degradation of natural systems.
