Human Immune response 2.1 Flashcards
Fever
- A non-specific immune response
- Increased body temperature
slows the function and
reproduction of pathogens
what do white blood cells (AKA Leukocytes) do?
Phagocytes: White blood cells which engulf and destroy pathogens
What do B-Lymphocytes do
White blood cells
which produce antibodies (special proteins) which immobilise or destroy pathogens
What do Memory cells (lymphocytes) do?
White blood cells which spread out
throughout the body (after an
infection) and allow a much faster
response upon secondary infection.
(The organism has aquired immunity)

What are vaccinations
Vaccines are artificial substances which trigger antibody & memory cell production without causing disease symptoms
What do Vaccines contain and what is the purpose?
- Often contain weakened /inactivated/ part of a pathogen.
- The presence of memory cells improves immunity to pathogen if infection occurs in the future
What are some hygiene practises?
1) Wear a mask when unwell
2) Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
3) Washing your hands frequently/ use sanitisers
4) Do not share personal items
5) Avoid close contact with unwell people (social
distancing)
6) Stay at home if you are sick so that you do not
infect other people
