Endocrine Control Flashcards
What does the endocrine consist of?
- endocrine glands located around the body
that produce / release hormones.
What are Hormones? What do they do?
- chemical substances that
travel through the bloodstream and influence
reaction rates within cells and tissues.
Control of the endocrine system occurs where in the brain?
the hypothalamus
What does the pituitary gland do?
regulated the majority of the other endocrine glands
What is connected with the Hypothalamus?
The Pituitary gland
Where do hormones travel through?
Travel through the bloodstream to target cell/tissue
What does the Thyroid gland release
Thyroxine into the blood, increases metabolism & heat production in target cells
What do hormones influence?
Influence reaction rates (enzyme activity)
What does the Hypothalamus release
hormones (sometimes called factors) to the pituitary gland, stimulating or inhibiting hormone release.
What is the purpose of the pituitary gland releasing hormones
to stimulate other endocrine glands to release hormones.
Example: Pituitary releases TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) to Thyroid gland
Where is the thyroid gland located
In the neck, either side of trachea
What is the Thyroid gland stimulated by?
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating
Hormone) released from pituitary gland
What does thyroxine increase:
○ Increases metabolism (chemical reactions)
○ Increases heat production
