Human Genomics Flashcards
What is a genome of an organism?
Its the entire hereditary of information encoded in DNA
What is a genome made up of?
Genes and other DNA sequences that do not code for proteins
What happens during genomics sequencing?
The sequence of the nucleotide bases can be determined for individual gene and entire genomes
How can computer programs be used in relation to genomics?
They can be used to identify base sequences by looking for sequences similar to known genes
What is bioinformatics?
This is the use of computer and statistical technology to identify DNA samples
When analysing an individuals genome, what can be predicted?
The likelihood of developing certain diseases
What is pharmacogenetics?
This is the use of genome information in the choice of drugs
What can an individuals personal genome help with in relation with pharmacogenetics?
This can be used to select the most effective drugs and dosage to treat their disease, which is know as personalised medicine
