Human Gas Exchange Flashcards
Trachea function and adaptation?
Supported by cartilage to stop collapsing
Bronchus function and adaptation?
supported by cartilage to avoid collapsing
Bronchioles function and adaptation?
muscles lined with epithelial cells so they can constrict to control air flow
Alveoli function and adaptation?
elastic fibres to allow them to stretch as they are filled with air
Diaphragm function and adaptation?
muscle that contracts during inhalation and relaxes during exhalation
Intercostal muscle function and adaptation?
muscle that contracts and relaxes during inhalation and exhalation
What happens during inhalation?
— External intercostal muscles contract
— Volume of throax increases
— The pressure of air in the atmosphere is higher than the pressure inside the thorax so oxygen diffuses into the lungs
What happens during exhalation?
— Intercostal muscles contract
— Volume of throax decreases
— The pressure of air in the atmosphere is lower than the pressure inside the thorax so oxygen diffuses out of the lungs
