Competitve Inhibition Flashcards
What is the molecular shape of a competitive inhibitor, and what does this allow it to do
It’s similar to that of a substrate, this allows them to occupy the active site of an enzyme
What do competitive inhibitors compete for with for what?
Compete with the substrate for the available active site
With competitive inhibitors what determines the effect on enzyme activity
The concentration of the inhibitor and and the concentration of the substrate
What happens if the substrate concentration is increased ?
The effect if the inhibitor is reduced
Is a inhibitor permanently attached to the active site?
The inhibitor is not permanently bound to the active site so, when it leaves another molecule can take its place
What happens when there is a greater concentration of competitive inhibitors?
Sooner or later, all of the substrate molecules will occupy an active site, but the greater the concentration of an inhibitor, the longer this will take place.
