Human effects on the world Flashcards
What do humans require?
Warmth, Oxygen, Money (economy), Shelter
Waste products…
CO2 + carbon monoxide Urea + faeces Water vapour SO2 Nitrous oxides ** acid rain
What is created from burning fossil fuels?
Carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxides.
What are effects of sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide
They dissolve in water vapour in clouds in our atmosphere malling the water acidic so when it rains its called Acid Rain.
Stages of acid rain:
- SO2, nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide rare produced from burning fossil fuels.
- Gases dissolve in the water vapour in atmosphere are making the clouds acidic (sulphuric and nitric acid).
- Prevailing winds can transport these gases hundreds of miles.
- Rain falls as acid rain.
- Damages aquatic ecosystems, soils, trees and buildings.
What is Lichen?
It is an organism made from algae and fungi.
Where does it grow?
Grows on rocks, buildings and trees.
What are the names of the greenhouse gases?
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Methane (CH4)
- Nitrous oxide (N2O or NO2)
- Water vapour (H2O)
- Chlorofloracarbons (CFCs)
What is the greenhouse effect?
Short wave (light) radiant iron from the sun passes through the atmosphere and hits the earth surface. Some is absorbed and heats the surface.
What does increasing global temperatures cause?
Desertification.
What causes flooding when global warming occurs?
The Caps melting.
How can water pollution occur?
- Sewage
2. Fertilisers
What does dumping sewage do?
It means there is a huge food source for bacteria, this allows the population of bacteria to drastically increase. As there are huge numbers of bacteria respiring and therefore they remove all the oxygen from the water. Meaning there is no O2 to allow the life to live in water.
What are fertilisers used for?
They are used for increasing the growth of plants, they are washed away easily, this is called leaching.
What does deforestation mean?
It is a large scale of trees that are removed permanently.
