Features of life Flashcards
Plants contain…
Chloroplast and are able to carry out photosynthesis, animal and fungi cells can’t carry out it.
What are plant cell walls made of?
Cellulose
What do they store their carbohydrates as?
starch
What do animals store their carbohydrates as?
Glycogen
What are fungi?
They are saprophytic and feed on the dead and are decaying matter by pouring digestive enzymes onto food absorbing the digested products.
What are fungi cell walls made of?
Chitin (a protein)
What is yeast?
Yeast is a single celled fungus that reproduces by a process of budding.
What is yeast used in?
Bread and alcohol.
Give an example of an protozoa.
Amoeba
Give one example of an algae.
Chlorella
What are pathogens?
They are microbes that cause disease.
Give 3 facts on viruses
- Much smaller than bacteria.
- They aren’t made from cells and they have no nucleus or cytoplasm.
- They infect every type of living cells.
- They are composed of a core of genetic material and surrounded by a protein coat.
What do viruses eat?
They don’t eat anything, they infect cells their molecular machinery to make more copies of themselves.
