Human Digestive Systems Flashcards
What Digestion
The process by which larger food molecules are broken down into smaller food molecules
Digestion at the mouth 1. Physical/mechanical Digestion
Chewing >grinding food with teeth to increase surface area for easy Digestion by enzyme
Mixes food with saliva , lubricating food to avoid choking when swallowing
Chemical Digestion
Starch contained in food in the mouth is digested by enzyme amylase to maltose
Digestion in the oesophagus
Digestion of starch continues
Peristalsis» relaxation and contraction of muscles of the oesophagus pushing food bolus down the stomach
Digestion in the stomach
The stomach walls secrete a juice known as a gastric juice containing enzyme pepsin and HCL
Hydrochloric acid in digestion
Provides an acidic condition for enzyme pepsin to work at its optimum best
It kills germs ingested with food
