Human Development- Reflexes Flashcards
Rooting
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: stroke corner of mouth, upper/lower lips
R: Mvmt of tongue, mouth, &/or head
Fx: Helps baby locate fdg source
O/I age: 28 wks gestation/ 3 months
Suck-swallow
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: place examiner index finger inside infant mouth w/ head in midline
R: strong, rhythmical sucking
Fx: Facilitate nutritive sucking for ingestion of liquids
O/I age:28 wks/ 5 mos
Traction
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Grasp infant forearms & pull-to-sit
R: Complete flexion of UEs
Fx: Momentary grasp to enable child to hold onto mother when pulled
O/I age: 28 wks/5 mos
Moro
Stim, resp,fx, onset/integration age
S: Rapid drop of infant head backwards
R: 1st-> arm E/ABD, hand opening
2nd-> arm F/ADD
Fx: protective resp to stress, develop extensor tone during period when flexor tone is dominant
O/I age: 28 wks/ 6mos
Plantar Grasp
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Apply pressure to infant ball of foot
R: Toe flexion
Fx: Inc. input to sole of foot; integration associated with readiness for independent gait
O/I age: 28 wks/9 mos
Galant
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Hold in prone suspension, scratch or tap along spine w finger
R: Lateral trunk flex. & wrinkling of skin on stim’ed side
Fx: Enhance trunk stabilization by facilitating lateral trunk mvmnt
O/I age: 32 wks/ 2 mos
ATNR
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: crawling position and extend the head
R: Ext of E’s on face side, Flex of E’s on skull side
Fx: Promotes visual attention to UE; dec incidence of rolling
O/I: 37 wks/ 6 mos
Palmar Grasp
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Place a finger in infant palm
R: Finger flexion; reflexive grasp
Fx: Inc palmar tactile input; prep muscles for voluntary grasp
O/I: 37 wks/6 mos
TLR- Supine
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Place infant in supine
R: Inc extensor tone
Fx: Facilitate full-body extensor tone ; allows posture to adapt to that of the head
O/I: >37wks/ 6 mos
TLR- Prone
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Place infant in prone
R: Inc flexor tone
Fx: Facilitate full-body flexor tone; allow posture to adapt to that of the head
O/I: >37 wks/ 6 mos
Landau
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Hol infant in horizontal prone position
R: Complete Ext of head, trunk & extremities
Fx: Regulate tone; promote prone extension to manage flexor tone
O/I: 3 mos/ 24 mos
STNR
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Place infant in crawling position and extend the head
R: Flex of hips & knees
Fx: Facilitate quadruped position in prep for crawling; breaks up total body extension
O/I: 4-6 mos/ 8-12 mos
NOB
Neck righting on body
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Place infant in supine & fully turn head to one side
R: Log rolling of entire body to maintain alignment w head
Fx: Faciliate rolling ; maintain body orientation in response to cervical position changes
O/I: 6 mos/ 5 years
BOB
Body righting on body
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: place infant in supine, flex one hip/knee towrd center of chest and hold briefly
R: Segmental rolling of upper trunk to maintain alignment
Fx: Promote** trunk & spinal rotation to facilitate sitting & quadruped** positions
O/I: 6 mos/ 5 years
Labyrinthine/ optical head righting
stim, resp, fx, onset/integration age
S: Hold infant suspended vertically & tilt slowly (~45 deg) to side, forward, backward
R: Upright positioning of head
Fx: basis for head mngmt & postural stability; orients head in space vertically
O/I: birth-2 mos/ persists thru life
