Energy Conservation & Work simplification Principles

- Plan short rest periods (5-10 min) throughout routine
- Schedule tasks for day, week, and month to alternate & balance heavy/light work tasks
- Organize task; gather all necessary items & equipment before beginning task
- Avoid multiple trips to retrieve items by using utility cart, bucket, backpack, walker bag etc to carry all items needed in one trip
- Eliminate nonessential tasks
- Delegate tasks beyond one’s capacity
- Combine tasks to eliminate extraneous work
- Sit to work at a table or use a high stool for countertop work
- Organize cabinets so items are easy to reach and convenient
- Use AE (e.g. reacher) to avoid bending/stooping
- Use electrical appliances( e.g. mixers) to dec personal effort
- Slide rather than lift heavy items
- Use lightweight equipment, tools and utensils
- Rest before fatigue sets in

A
- Maintain joint ROM by using maximal ROM during daily activities
- Maintain muscle strength by using maximal strength during daily activities
- Use strongest & largest joint that is possible for task completion
a. Use knees/hips for lifting
B. Push large items w/ full body rather than pull
C. Lift w/ both hands, palms up
D. Carry purses, bags on forearm rather than wrist; using ergonomic backpack is optimal
