Biological sex
based on physical/visible characteristics, reproductive functions, and genetics
Gender
- social construct of culturally-based expectations typically based on one’s biological sex
Gender role
expected appearance, clothing, speech, manner, interests, play, occupations, etc
Gender identity
one’s core self-concept of his/her gender
Gender expression
how one chooses to outwardly manifest one’s gender identity
Sex-Typed
males with high masculinity, low femininity scores and vice versa
Cross Sex-Typed
females with high masculinity, low femininity
Androgynous
Females and males with both high masculinity and femininity
Undifferentiated
Femals and males with both low femininity and masculinity
Transgender
general term describing people whose gender identity is not congruent with the usual gender role for their assigned sex
May be of any sexual orientation
Transsexual
person who identifies oneself as a member of the biological sex opposite to that assigned at birth
Usually feels that both gender identity and true sex do not match one’s assigned or recognized biological sex
May dress in accordance with gender identity and pursue any treatments to achieve congruence
May be of any sexual orientation
Bi-gender
Refers to person who moves back and forth between distinct feminine and masculine gender identities and roles
Cross-dresser
People who wear clothing of the “opposite gender”
Most are heterosexual and identify with biological sex
Synonymous with transvestite
Gender Reassignment Therapy
Transexual patient may seek medical treatment to facilitate gender transition, a spectrum of medical interventions:
Puberty blocking meds, hormone replacement therapy, sex reassignment surgery, other surgical procedures
Sexual orientation
pattern of emotional, romantic, sexual, and spiritual attraction to males, females, both, or neither
