Human development from fertilisation to birth Flashcards
Fertilisation
-if a sperm enters an ovum in the Fallopian tubes, fertilisation occurs.
-a haploid sperm meets a haploid egg to create a diploid zygote.
Conception
-once an egg has been fertilised it closes off for other sperm
-the fertilised egg travels down the Fallopian tubes and into the uterus
Blastocyst
-as the egg is travelling, it is undergoing mitosis creating a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst.
Implantation
-blastocyst (now an embryo) is embedded into the endometrium (uterine wall) where it will get its nutrients until the placenta forms.
Fetus
-fetus receives nutrients from placenta as it grows approximately 9 months
Birth
-oxytocin is released causing contractions to begin
-causes water to break
-cervix needs to dilate about 10cm to begin active labour
-baby would exit head first + face down
-complications with the dilation will cause c-section to be done or surgically cutting open the vagina
