Human Defenses (Biology) Flashcards
1
Q
Give three ways in which white blood cells can fight disease.
A
White blood cells can engulf foreign cells and digest them by phagocytosis.
By producing antibodies which lock on to invading cells so they can be found and destroyed by other white blood cells.
By producing antitoxins which counteract toxins produced by the invading bacteria.

Q
Give four examples of non-specific defence systems in your body.
A
Skin acts as a barrier to pathogens.
Hairs and mucus in your nose trap particles that could contain pathogens.
The trachea and bronchi secrete mucus to trap pathogens.
The stomach produces hydrochloric acid which can kill pathogens.
