Human Defense System Flashcards
Antibodies
Proteins produced by white blood cells in respond to antigens
Antigens
Foreign molecule that causes production of an antibody
Thymus gland
White blood cells mature here
Types of T Cells
Killer
Helper
Suppressor
Memory
Killer t cells
Produce perforin to attack abnormal body cells
Helper T cells
Recognise antigen on white blood cells
Suppressor
Inhibit immune response
Memory T cells
Stimulate memory B cells + killer T cells
Interferon
Protein which specifically attacks viruses
Perforin
Attacks abnormal body cells
Immunity
Ability to resist disease
Pathogen
Anything that causes disease usually bacteria, virus or fungi
B cells
Mature in bone marrow
Make antibodies
Retain memory of infection
Plasma B cells
Produce antibodies
Each B cell recognises one specific antigen and produce one specific antibody
Induced immunity
Ability to resist disease caused by specific pathogens by the production of antibodies
Active immunity
Persons own antibodies are produced in response to antigen
Passive immunity
Antibodies are obtained from another source
Vaccine
A dead microbe that is injected into the body and triggers antibodies but does not cause the disease
