Human Characteristics -Xylem Vessels Flashcards
Characteristics and classification of living organisms.
In order to be considered alive, an organism must be able to show the following seven characteristics.
Movement - the action of an organism causing a change of position or place
Respiration - a chemical reaction that takes in all living cells that break down glucose and release energy
Sensitivity - the ability of an organism to dectect and respond to changes in the external and internal environment
Growth- the permanent increase in dry mass and size
Excretion - the removal of waste products
Reproduction- the process of making more of the same kind organisms
Nutrition- taking in materials (food and nutrients)for energy, growth and development.
What is classification
Give two reasons why classifying organisms is a good idea
Grouping things according to similar characteristics
- easier to research , identify and name
What is a food chain
Show us the flow of energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem
What does the word photosynthesis mean
Using light to make food
Think of two more words that start with “photo”. Write these words and say what it means
Photography- using light to make a picture
Photocopy- using light to copy a picture
What happens during photosynthesis
During photosynthesis the plant uses energy from the sun , water from the soil and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce glucose as a food source and oxygen
How can we determine whether photosynthesis turned took place
The amount of carbon dioxide decreases, water decreases and glucose and oxygen increases
Why is glucose not stored inside a plant
To not lower the water potential inside the cell that would cause to much water to enter the cell and lead to cell death
Why should we destarched before photosynthesis investigation
To make sure any starch present after the investigation was formed during the investigation
Biomass
Material that is made up of living cells and tissue
Difference between chlorophyll and chloroplast
Chlorophyll- the pigment that gives colour to leaves that are green
Chloroplast - the cell organelle found inside photosynthesis plant tissue.
Why are the roots of a plant not green but the leaves are
The roots are never exposed to the sunlight and therefore cannot photosynthesis and therefore will not contain chlorophyll
Explain the colour change of the plant
Chlorophyll is Brocken down . Plant removes chlorophyll and no new tips added
Function of leaf
Cuticle
Upper epidermal
Lower epidermal
Inter secular airspeces
Spongy
Vein
Stomata
- waxy layer that prevents water loss
- protect the plant cells inside the plant
-protect the plant cells
-allow gases to move between the cells
-photosynthesis - palicide spcells - photosynthesis
- allow the movements of gassses.
- transport minerals and water
2) What are the functions of:
NaOH
Soda lime
Water
- absorb any carbon dioxide in the bell jar
- absorb any CO2 in the air from entering the bell jar
- to make two conclusions similar
