Q

Characteristics and classification of living organisms.
In order to be considered alive, an organism must be able to show the following seven characteristics.

A

Movement - the action of an organism causing a change of position or place
Respiration - a chemical reaction that takes in all living cells that break down glucose and release energy
Sensitivity - the ability of an organism to dectect and respond to changes in the external and internal environment
Growth- the permanent increase in dry mass and size
Excretion - the removal of waste products
Reproduction- the process of making more of the same kind organisms
Nutrition- taking in materials (food and nutrients)for energy, growth and development.

Q

What is classification
Give two reasons why classifying organisms is a good idea

A

Grouping things according to similar characteristics
- easier to research , identify and name

Q

What happens during photosynthesis

A

During photosynthesis the plant uses energy from the sun , water from the soil and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce glucose as a food source and oxygen

Q

How can we determine whether photosynthesis turned took place

A

The amount of carbon dioxide decreases, water decreases and glucose and oxygen increases

Q

Why is glucose not stored inside a plant

A

To not lower the water potential inside the cell that would cause to much water to enter the cell and lead to cell death

Q

Why are the roots of a plant not green but the leaves are

A

The roots are never exposed to the sunlight and therefore cannot photosynthesis and therefore will not contain chlorophyll
