Tissue
A group of similar cells that perform the same function.
Organ
A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together.
Organ system
A group of organs that work together, performing major functions.
Muscle tissue
A body tissue that contracts, or shortens, making the body parts move.
Nervous tissue
A body tissue that carries electrical messages back and fourth between the brain and other parts of the body.
Connective tissue
A body tissue that provides support for the body and connects all its parts.
Epithelial tissue
A body tissue that covers the interior and exterior surface of the body.
Skeleton
The inner framework made up of all the bones of the body.
Skeleton muscle
A muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones; also called striated muscle.
Joint
A place in the body where two bones come together.
Nutrient
- A substance such as nitrogen or phosphorus that unable a plants and algae to grow.
- Substances in food that provide the raw materials and energy needed for an organism to carry out its essentials processes.
Absorption
- The process by which nutrient molecules pass through the wall of the digestive system into the blood.
- The process by which an object takes in, or absorb, light.
Gland
An organ that produces and releases chemicals either through ducts or into the bloodstream.
Stimulus
Any change or signal in the environment that make an organism react in some way.
