Human Body: Muscular System Flashcards
Three major types of muscle
1) Smooth Muscle
2) Cardiac Muscle
3) Skeletal Muscle
Smooth Muscle
Muscle that contracts automatically and are involuntary
Cardiac Muscle
Muscle that makes up the heart
Skeletal Muscle
Muscle that is connected by bones and tendons
Fascia
Connective tissue that surrounds each bundle of muscle fibers and outside every muscle; runs throughout the entire body
Tendons
Connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Ligaments
Connective tissue that connects bone to bone
The entire process of a muscle contracting is referred to as this theory
Sliding Filament Theory
Myosin
Thick filament of protein that catches on actin when a muscle contracts
Actin
Thin filament of protein that catches on myosin when a muscle contracts
Steps to a muscle contracting

Concentric Contraction
Type of contraction where the ends of the muscle come closer together; muscle shortens when working
Eccentric Contraction
Type of contraction where the ends of the muscle move farther apart; muscle lenthens when working
Isometric Contraction
Type of contraction where muscle is working but doesn’t move position; muscle stays same length when working
