Human Anatomy and Physiology Flashcards
What are the three primary body planes?
Sagittal/Lateral
Coronal/Frontal
Axial/Transverse
Sagittal/Lateral Plane
Divides the body vertically into right and left sections. It runs parallel to the midline of the body.
Coronal/Frontal Plane
Divides the body vertically into front and back (anterior & posterior) sections. Runs vertically through the body at right angles to the midline.
Transverse/Axel/Horizontal Plane
Divides the patient’s body into imaginary upper (superior) and lower (inferior or caudal ) halves.
Medial
Nearer to the midline of the body.
Lateral
The opposite of medial. It refers to structures farther away from the body’s midline, at the sides.
Proximal
Structures closer to the center of the body. The hip is proximal to the knee.
Distal
Structures further away from the center of the body
Anterior
structures in front
Posterior
Structures behind
Cephalad & Cephalic
Towards the head
Cranial
Of the skull
Caudad
Towards the tail or posterior
Caudal
the hindquarters
Superior
Means above or closer to the head
Inferior
Below or closer to the feet
Right Hypochondriac
Right Kidney, liver, gallbladder, and small intestines.
Epigastric
Epi= on, above stomach, liver, adrenal glands, pancreas, spleen, small intestine.
Left Hypochondriac
Left Kidney, spleen, pancreas and colon
