Hubble's Law & Measuring Galaxy Distances Flashcards
A relationship between distance and velocity for galaxies. The more distant the galaxy, the faster it was receding from us.
Hubbles Law
The study of the overall structure and
evolution of the Universe.
Cosmology
The sum total of all matter and energy.
Universe
A huge collection of a few hundred million to
more than a trillion stars, all bound together by gravity
Galaxy
stars and the objects bound to it by gravity and orbit it.
Solar System
units given in km/s
Velocity
The distance light travels in 1 year
Light-year
distance at which a star has a parallax of 1 arc second
Parsec
1 Mpc = 10^6 pc
Megaparsec
The idea that we are not in a
privileged place in the universe
The cosmological principle
objects that do not obey Hubble’s Law
objects bound together by gravity
determine the distances of stars by their shift in appearance
The parallax method
determine a star’s distance through its luminosity & brightness
Standard candle method
The shift of an objects appearance after a shift in the observers position
Parallax
an object whose luminosity we know
from some distinctive property
Standard candle
