what is HTN
increase in blood pressure causing excessive force against the arterial walls
what are some risk factors?
FHx, obesity, High sodium diet, smoking, and etoh
what are some cc?
asymptomatic
hypertension by measuring at home
when HTN starts to affect organs you can get
HA, CP, palpitations, blurred vision, epistaxis
PE
lower extremity edema, carotid bruit (is a sound heard), JVD (jugular vein distention), abnormal heart sounds
Dx
BP check and measuring with a b.p cuff
Systolic blood pressure?
measures pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts
diastolic pressure?
measures pressure in the arteries when relaxed
what is considered hypotensive?
<90/60
what is considered normal?
90/60 and 120/80
what is considered prehypertensive
121/81 and 140/90
what is considered hypertensive?
<140/90
what are some diseases caused by HTN?
CAD/MI CHF CVA Renal Failure impaired vision
how to manage HTN?
check blood pressure change NA diet exercise less smoking decrease etoh
what is a medication used to manage HTN and what is its abbreviation?
Hyrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) which is a diuretic
